In a world that feels overwhelming and fractured, the call for love and peace is more prominent than ever. “Civil Obedience” reminds us to focus on what truly matters: love and compassion. “Civil Obedience” is a highly energetic indie rock song that draws from the raw spirit of 90s rock, and energetic positivity of the 60s hippie movement. Impassioned vocals and meaningful lyrics meet a catchy guitar riff. We designed this feel good anthem for a better tomorrow. The Karlos Kollective and I wanted to collab for quite a long while. Their rather psychedelic sound needed a big stadium anthem, and this is what happened when I wrote “Civil Obedience”. Everything started with a simple guitar riff, that stayed in my head for days. By sending it back and forth, we wrote a full song around that riff, and deliberately decided that the intro has to be long and epic. Please be patient for the full-blown explosion towards the end. You can find our song on all streaming services now. I hope you enjoy it!

Every year, there’s a special kind of collaboration that I enjoy a lot: team up with random musicians and create a song in an add a track game. This is how we created “Magnetic Rose”, a fast alternative rock song with a heavy beat. If you remember my post on “Mr. Tumbleweed” last Summer, we organized a similar event in February. We barely know each other, we don’t have a plan, but somebody starts with one track and all other band members add whatever instrument, vocal or sample they like. “Magnetic Rose” started with the rhythm guitar tracks and reached me in second position. I decided to add drums instead of keys, because I saw this song converging towards rock. The risk to finish such a driving song without vocals or drums has been too high. Right after me, T.C. added a bass track. Finally, Rod decided to write lyrics and sing. We should have ended with 4 tracks, but I needed a wall of guitars, so we recorded 9 tracks in total. As you can see, the challenge is a lot about taking quick, irreversible decisions and getting things done. The whole composition, recording and mixing process took one month and sounds like this: You can listen to the song on YouTube or download it for free on SoundCloud. The band has been awesome to work with, thank you for collaborating.

“Mr. Tumbleweed” is the name of a song, that has been recorded in an international collaboration. But one thing is special: We didn’t know each other, and we didn’t have a plan. Read how this turned out. There are many ways to write songs with a group of people. But most of them have something in common: You know your people. At least, you know them well enough that you talked about the instrument, the level of knowledge and the style. But “Mr. Tumbleweed” torn the whole concept apart. We recorded this song track by track. Whoever joined the collaboration added whatever instrument they preferred. This kind of collaboration works because of three simple rules: I started this project by programming drums. This way, tempo and structure are fixed. The Fishermen & The Priestess added guitars and fixed the chord scheme. Patti Fetz added a synthesizer bass and Cheslain dropped in with vocals and lyrics. The last track has been some synthesizer pads from Floral Tops. I have been the producer, so I mixed and mastered it to a song. “Mr. Tumbleweed” is about a person, who doesn’t care about rules and liabilities. He lives from one day to another. Maybe a prowler, maybe somebody you won’t like to meet. Nobody knows. We are very proud of our result. My SoundCloud followers were able to hear this song right after production, but now it also moved to my YouTube channel. I’d like to thank all talented musicians who joined this experiment. It has been fun to work with you and thus, nice to meet you!
