Now it’s official: together with Christopher, I’m launching the online band “Flawed Theorem”. How it all came about, and what we’ll be releasing soon, you can read up here. If you have been following my website or music profiles for a while, you might have come across Christopher Matthew Smith before. On my album “Going My Way”, we recorded “At your command”, an epic prog rock track with numerous time signature changes. Over the following years, we created many more songs ranging between alternative rock, progressive rock, and metal. All of them felt cohesive, like they belonged together. We held them back, thinking they might work for an album. Last summer, we finally met in person and decided not just to make an album, but to form a band. It took us several months to come up with a band name, and then things moved pretty quickly: logo design, social media channels, mastering songs and searching for artwork. Flawed Theorem is now officially the progressive rock / metal band formed by Christopher and me. Alongside composition, arrangement, and production, I will also play synthesizers and guitar. Christopher will be writing lyrics and providing vocals on all tracks. If you’re into Tool, System of a Down, Opeth, or Katatonia, you might enjoy our song. Other influences include Coheed and Cambria, Led Zeppelin, and Pearl Jam. Since I currently have to take a break from making music, we decided two weeks ago to finally go public with the project. We would really appreciate your support, so feel free to drop a like, follow, or comment on our profiles: https://www.facebook.com/flawedtheoremhttps://www.instagram.com/flawedtheoremhttps://open.spotify.com/intl-de/artist/3aOJWxo4UujSzJ3DLHyJvehttps://soundcloud.com/flawedtheoremhttps://flawedtheorem.bandcamp.com You can already pre-save our debut single “Petals”. As a nice side effect, you will also be able to follow our brand-new profiles on streaming platforms. They are currently set private, so we cannot forward links.

While Daniel and I were working on “Into the Abyss” another song emerged. “Beneath the Shell” expresses the fear of existence, the dread of everyday life and waiting for metamorphosis. “Beneath the Shell” is one of the few songs where the lyrics have been written first. Inspired by Franz Kafka’s novels, especially “The Metamorphosis”, this song reflects dark thoughts. What if we are meaningless insects? Does this perspective as bug lurking into different lives do any good? Both musically and lyrically, “Beneath the Shell” does not shy away from strong language and dreadful images of weltschmerz. That’s why we decided against a mild version. This time I wrote the lyrics and let Daniel record the song the way he hard it. In the end, I added some layers of synthesizers and produced the song. For me, it was a very interesting project, because I rarely have the opportunity to work with extended range instruments. Thank you for that! As usual, you can find the song on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp. I would highly appreciate it if you could leave a comment on SoundCloud or YouTube, as these are the only platforms for that.

At some point, everybody had issues with fake friends. Some people are just nasty, others can push you into the abyss. This metalcore song channels the frustration when you realize, that you encountered another toxic person. Writing and producing “Into the Abyss” has been big fun, because it’s the first time I produce a metalcore song. I am a big fan of this music genre for many years already, but listening and arranging are two different things. Everything started with Thomas’ synthesizer melody, that I used in the intro and chorus. I was tempted to add heavy guitars and drums – and this sound reminded me of metalcore. All we needed were some punchy screams, but these were much harder to get than expected, which is why I tried my best in a different technique. Lyrically, “Into the Abyss” speaks of friends, who wrap you into great promises and talk bad things about you. Some of them may even push you literally into the abyss. I am happy that we have Daniel Hiatt on the guitars, lead guitars and clean vocals. It has been great to try a new genre, and I hope that we wrote a catchy song. This time we also recorded a “clean version” if you’re not much into cursing. “Into the Abyss” is now online on all Streaming Plattformen and on Bandcamp . We appreciate every listen and comment, especially on YouTube und SoundCloud.

Our new symphonic metal song deals with chances and challenges of transformation. At some point of our life, we have to face changes, or metaphorically speaking, embrace the storm. This song has been recorded in an international team and is now available on all platforms. As some of you may know, I am a big fan of metal music. Especially symphonic and progressive metal make my heart beat faster, because of its complexity and emotion. I always wanted to write a song like that, and in 2021 I simply did. Some hours later, Gabrielle Gold, who is also a big fan of the genre, sent me some great lyrics and a draft for the vocal melody. This big arrangement needed a skilled band, including a classically trained vocalist. It has been extremely hard to find the right people, which is why it took nearly 4 years to record the song. Our patience rewarded us with a badass team consisting of Nadia Selvaggi on the vocals, who originally came from classical and church music, but has a big heart for rock, metal and trip hop – Sebastien Jean on guitars, whose solo project Elirah’s Cross stands for complex progressive metal with big solos. I am happy that this team found together and turned our draft into something huge. Lyrically, “Embrace the Storm” is about changes and overcoming inner resistance. You can clearly read that Gabrielle’s writing is inspired by nature, and she used the metaphor to create an epic imagery. Musically, this song is quite complex with multiple key changes, triplet meters and intricate counter melodies. We recorded over 40 tracks of pure epicness. “Embrace the Storm” is now available on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp. Please listen, share or simply write a comment on SoundCloud or YouTube. We appreciate every listen.

Our new alternative rock / alternative metal song Backwards is dealing with a crisis of faith. Most of us have broken peace with God at some point, but in Christian belief, forgiveness will come freely, turning our expectations backwards. I am very happy to have teamed up with an international band. Backwards turned out as a real banger. You will never guess how “Backwards” started. In 2021, Michael, a befriended musician, worked on an epic rock opera about time travelling and contacted me to turn his lyrics into a song. While writing this song, it turned out that the original lyrics were too long. They would have resulted in a 15-minute song, which is why we decided to stop the collab. Michael turned his lyrics into a different song, where much more lyrics could be fitted – and I continued on the instrumental. It took another two years until my instrumental draft was good enough to search for instrumentalists. Pekka recorded drums, Scott recorded guitars, but we still lacked of a vocalist, lead guitarist and bassist. The hardest part was, that I could not get Michael’s original lyrics out of my head, so I also needed a lyricist. The halfway recorded draft stuck for many months, because we needed a certain vocal timbre within a certain range to use the original melody. I was close to giving up, until Molly uploaded a great song in a similar style onto her SoundCloud profile. Though I’ve been following her for years, her new song had that special something that reminded me of my draft of “Backwards”, which is why I sent it to her. Everything after went super quick – Molly wrote lyrics, brought a new melody and recorded a stunning vocal take. She brought her nephew Brinden, who improvised the lead solo. After 4 years of hard work, our song feels right and complete. As it’s very important for me that band members align with the song, I give them a lot of creative freedom. Molly enjoys writing about spirituality, so the lyrics deal with the inner struggle with God. When rebellion and pride meet humility and obedience, we have to decide which side to take, and in this case, the protagonist runs backwards while realizing that God’s grace and forgiveness is free. As written above, Brinden’s solo is fully improvised, while Scott picked his own guitar sound. Pekka added some double bass action and new fills, making this song a big heavier as planned. All in all, I am very happy with the result. “Backwards” is now available on all streaming platforms and soon will be part of the Bandcamp subscription. Thank you so much for collaborating!
