The Dying of the Art – When generative AI kills art

This new progressive rock song from Flawed Theorem questions the very nature of art. When generative AI started to create art, everybody had to find a way to understand and process the shifts in technology and society both. As an artist, who took years to learn how to paint a realistic portrait, it hurts that AI can do that in a few seconds, based on millions of pictures, and most of them used without permission. Do we show appreciation when we use that technology? Or are we silently destroying artistry? Several months ago, I woke up with a dark vision of this world. Art is fully replaced by generative AI. Instead of painting pictures, playing instruments or performing dances, humanity finds themselves in the role of consumers that can create everything they can imagine. Art will lose its substance and credibility, as people forget about the process and emotions behind it. I reached out to Chris to write a lyric about my dark vision, and soon we figured that 7/8 is the right time signature to write an unsettling song. Its stumbling nature resonates well with the entangled emotions this topic creates for many of us. Will art survive, transform or die? Will we find a different way to express ourselves? The cover artwork of “The Dying of the Art” is taking from the Cleveland Museum. “Memento Mori” by William Michael Harnett shows a citation of Hamlet and all sorts of death related allegories. We chose this painting to remind ourselves, what are we truly spending our lives on. What will remain after we’re gone? And also, because a piece of classical art is a bold statement against today’s perfectly generated artworks. Our song “The Dying of the Art” is now available on all streaming services. A song completely free from AI, and is full of little mistakes and irregularities. A song, that talks about one of the most important topics of today’s world. Petals – The debut single of Flawed Theorem

In my previous post, I announced my new band project Flawed Theorem. Today we just released our first single, “Petals”. Read this post to find the link. Petals is a reflection on the quiet tension between hope and doubt. It takes inspiration from the familiar ritual of plucking petals one by one, caught in the question of “she loves me, she loves me not”. A simple act that can carry surprising emotional weight. Gentle acoustic sections give way to heavy riffs, mirroring the shift from inward reflection to the urge to act. In the very last moment you might ask yourself: When everything comes down to it, where will the final petal land? Christopher and I chose “Petals” as the first song because it’s one of our most accessible and radio ready songs. We did not want to bother you with an 8-minute song at first time, but we promise that this will happen someday soon! Flawed Theorem – A brand-new music project

Now it’s official: together with Christopher, I’m launching the online band “Flawed Theorem”. How it all came about, and what we’ll be releasing soon, you can read up here. If you have been following my website or music profiles for a while, you might have come across Christopher Matthew Smith before. On my album “Going My Way”, we recorded “At your command”, an epic prog rock track with numerous time signature changes. Over the following years, we created many more songs ranging between alternative rock, progressive rock, and metal. All of them felt cohesive, like they belonged together. We held them back, thinking they might work for an album. Last summer, we finally met in person and decided not just to make an album, but to form a band. It took us several months to come up with a band name, and then things moved pretty quickly: logo design, social media channels, mastering songs and searching for artwork. Flawed Theorem is now officially the progressive rock / metal band formed by Christopher and me. Alongside composition, arrangement, and production, I will also play synthesizers and guitar. Christopher will be writing lyrics and providing vocals on all tracks. If you’re into Tool, System of a Down, Opeth, or Katatonia, you might enjoy our song. In search for “Truth”

Collaborating with plenty of musicians from different genres, we wrote a progressive rock opera dealing with different aspects of truth. How did write a song with 8 people that show our individual strengths and still sounds like a collaboration? Everything started with a piano theme and a couple of chords I provided for the group. Everybody could write new parts or record whatever instrument. Our group consists of multiple musicians coming from pop, rock, metal, ambient and soundtrack. So I decided to leave the genre open and let people do whatever they like. The individual parts and melodies were arranged into a 10-minute progressive rock epic. The song consists of several chapters with musical themes and lyrics that all deal with the search for truth. You can listen to and download our song on Myownmusic (German), SoundCloud or YouTube. The full credits are available in my discography of side projects. It’s been my first time to work in such a big group and letting ideas flow. In the end, I could not even say who wrote which part or which instrument, because everybody added something to the project and pushed it into their direction. I was the arranger and producer, but I also authored some parts. The whole group did a good job in composing, improvising and recording. Thank you so much for being part of the project. We learned a lot about ourselves, both musically and personal. This won’t be our last project, for sure!
