Turn to Dust – Post-apocalyptic prog metal
Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, this progressive metal song captures a state of being: wandering through emptiness, a barren soul haunted by memories and nightmares that will never cease to exist. Musically, “Turn to Dust” is inspired by Arabic rhythms and scales that add a cinematic touch to modern metal. A new song by Nadine de Macedo, Elirah’s Cross and Sonia Hutchinson
Several months ago, I found myself jamming a strange melody on the guitar. Its scale reminded me of oriental music, and I ended up in odd time signatures. I contacted Elirah’s Cross (with whom I recorded “Embrace The Storm”), because complex and experimental music might just be up his alley. He wrote new parts to our song end took a deep dive into Arabic rhythms. With new knowledge and inspiration, we finished off the full instrumental. Until then, I did not know that Elirah’s Cross also plays the Oud, a microtonal instrument that gives this song a special flavour. Then we approached our mutual friend Sonia Hutchinson (with whom I recorded “The Secret of the Future”), who was inspired to write about a post apocalyptic world. For some reason, the theme of dessert and emptiness was lingering in all our heads which is why the song is now called “Turn to Dust”.
You can find our collaboration on all streaming platforms now. Thank you so much for the collaboration and co-write, it has been so much fun to work on something that complex and different.
